John entered Parliament in November 2007 after a casual vacancy in the South Australian Legislative Council was created by the resignation of Nick Xenophon. John Darley was Nick's second running mate on the Independent - No Pokies ticket in the 2006 state election.
Since entering Parliament, John has been integral in bringing about legislative reform on issues such as security of payment for the building and construction industry, introduction of a small business commissioner for South Australia and natural resource management.
John is the current chairperson for the Land Tax Reform Association of South Australia (Inc) which was formed after members of the public came together due to their concerns about the increasing cost of land tax in South Australia. John is still very passionate about this issue and continues to push for land tax reform.
Prior to entering politics, John was in the public service for 39 years and held various positions including:
- Chief Executive Officer of Valuation Department
- Chief Executive Officer of Lands Department
- Chief Executive Officer of State Services
