Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill

5 May 2021

The Hon John Darley MLC noted that he did not make a second reading contribution because he thought his position was well known in the Legislative Council but took the opportunity to make a very brief contribution in the discussion of Clause 1.

John noted that he had supported all the past bills and would again on this occasion. John pointed out that many safeguards had been inserted and choice was provided for those who found themselves in an unacceptable end-of-life situation.

In addition, John pointed out that elsewhere in our health and welfare system, there needed to be substantial improvements to services and their delivery, to make the options more acceptable, for those needing extensive support or residential care.

John concluded that members had had time to consider the VAD regime proposed and he would not be well-disposed to support amendments that undermine its intent or structure.
